Students of 2019 LL.M. Program in Chinese Business Law: On-Site Class at SHIAC

On the morning of 21 November 2019, more than 20 students from the 2019 LL.M. Program in Chinese Business law, international exchange students and Chinese students visited Shanghai International Arbitration Centre (Also known as “Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission”, SHIAC). The visit was organised by Vice Dean of Fudan Law School, Professor Chen Li, who teaches Chinese Commercial Arbitration for LLM in Chinese Business Law Program.

Mr. Zou Rui, the Secretary of the Business Development Department of Shanghai International Arbitration Centre received the visiting students. He introduced the history, development and main business areas of the Shanghai International Arbitration Centre, and also shared his experience in the arbitration business.

The Shanghai International Arbitration Centre is an independent arbitration institution approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in 1988. In October 2013, SHIAC established The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Court of Arbitration and formulated the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Arbitration Rules in line with international practice. Then in October 2015, SHIAC established the first dispute resolution platform for the BRICS countries, BRICS Dispute Resolution Shanghai Centre. Additionally, in November 2015, the China-Africa Joint Arbitration Centre Shanghai was set up. The Shanghai International Arbitration Centre is committed in its important role of arbitration amongst dispute resolutions and legal environment construction. The aim is to promote internationalized and professionalised arbitration service while devoting itself to building Shanghai to be an Asia-Pacific and global arbitration centre. 

The visit concluded with a Q&A session. The international students actively asked questions about the qualifications for becoming an arbitrator at Shanghai International Arbitration Centre, foreign arbitrators in China and other related issues. After a photo session, the visit successfully concluded.
