The 16th CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot was held in Beijing from November 18 to 23, 2018. More than 500 contestants from 56 university teams participated in the competition. Over 100 arbitrators, lawyers and scholars at home and abroad judged 119 matches. The number of the participating teams, contestants and matches reached a record high this year.

Fudan University Team ranked tenth by the overall score and won the group second prize. Liu Yanbin and Yang Yuhan won the coveted award of "Best Oralist" during the General Rounds, ranking second and fourth respectively. Zhou Zeling received the “Outstanding Contribution" award. The result was a breakthrough for Fudan University Team in the CIETAC Cup competition. After the contest, distinguished arbitrators Eric Ng and Jane Willems commended the Fudan students for their critical thinking skills and fluency in English.

Fudan University Team has performed well in Vis Moot series in the past. Under the auspices of Vice Dean Chen Li, Professors Lu Zhian, Ban Tianke, Chen Li and former team members, this year’s Fudan Vis Team comprises Ye Ziyi (J.M. 2020), Liu Yanbin (LL.M. 2021), Chen Haowen (J.M. 2021), Yang Yuhan (LL.B. 2019), Xiang Yi (LL.B. 2019), Zhou Zeling (LL.B. 2020), Sun Miao (LL.B. 2020), Jiang Zhiqi (LL.B. 2020) and Wang Lvzhi (LL.B. 2021). After forming the Team in early October, through several weeks of laborious preparation, the Team had completed and submitted memoranda, and held several intensive practice sessions before travelling to Beijing for the event.

In recent years, Fudan University mooting teams have made remarkable progress in various competitions at home and abroad. This shall be attributed to the enthusiastic support from Fudan Law School administration and faculty members. Increasing numbers of students could get involved in famous international mooting competitions, including Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition, Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot, and ICC Moot Court Competition.

CIETAC Cup is organized by China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC). The competition, in which all submissions and oral arguments are in English, aims to improve participating students’ international commercial arbitration theory, practice and language skills.
