Marcus Gustafsson Gave a Lecture on International Trade Law from a European Perspective

In the morning of 30th September, Marcus Gustafsson, Associate at Van Bael & Bellis law firm, visited Fudan law school and gave a lecture on topic of “International Trade Law from a European Perspective”, which led to a heated discussion among teachers and students. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Chen li, the Vice Dean of Fudan Law School.

Mr. Gustafsson is now an Associate at Van Bael & Bellis law firm in Brussels, Belgium, who at work mainly represents clients in proceedings before the WTO Dispute Settlement Body, Court of Justice of the EU as well as other institutions, and helps the governments to deal with related disputes.

In the lecture, Mr. Gustafsson addressed the Sino-US trade friction and the Brexit situation, and detailed the crisis which WTO is now faced with. He also introduced the EU’s efforts at saving the WTO appellate body, including the proposal to establish an alternative appellate body mechanism, which was raised in May this year. Also, Mr. Gustafsson introduced the EU's new anti-dumping rules and their impacts on China. Based on that, Prof. Zhang Naigen and Mr. Gustafson inspiringly discussed and analyzed the relevant cases and issues between China and the EU.

In addition, Gustavson introduced his own experience working as an international trade lawyer. After a ten-minute Q&A session, the two-hour lecture ended successfully.
