Prof. Zhao Yun Gave a Lecture on The New Development of Exploration of Space Resource and China’s Strategy

In the afternoon of 5th June, 2018, Prof. Zhao Yun, the Head of Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong, visited Fudan University Law School. The Vice Dean, Prof. Chen Li, Prof. Zhang Naigen, and Dr. Xiong Hao welcomed Prof. Zhao on behalf of the Fudan University Law School. Both sides expressed the strong interest to enhance the cooperation, and reached several consensus in terms of legal research and academic exchange.

After the meeting, Prof. Zhao gave an academic lecture on The New Development of Exploration of Space Resource and China’s Strategy. With the development of the technology, space Law, according Prof. Zhao, is now becoming to be a cutting-edge area of the international law, which experienced the historical stages of five international conventions from 1967 to 1979. Historically speaking, the legal issues in the space becomes increasingly complicated, from state-oriented system to private commercialization. In this case, the space law transforms from national law to international law, from public law to private law, and shows its overlapping nature. Today, new phenomena like commercial rocket, space travel and space state have drawn more and more attention, and generated strategically significant research questions.   

Through reviewing the historical development of space law, Prof. Zhao’s presentation led the audiences to understand the trend of this legal area, and the relevant cutting-edge issues. When commenting the lecture, Prof. Zhang Naigen emphasized the importance to further study on space law as a legal scholar, and invited Prof. Zhao to visit Fudan again to share his thoughts and research.
