Appointment ceremony of WTO Appellate Body member Zhao Hong, was held
On November 30, 2017, the appointment ceremony of Dr. Zhao Hong as adjunct professor of Fudan University Law School was held at the Leo KoGuan Law Building, Jiangwan Campus of Fudan Univeristy. Prof. Wang Zhiqiang, Dean of Law School, presented the appointment certificate to Ms. Zhao Hong and warmly welcomed her to Fudan Law School.
In the first session of the ceremony, Prof. Chen Li (Ms.), Vice Dean of Law School, delivered an opening address to honored guest and all participants. Prof. Zhang Naigen, director of the Center for International Law Study at Fudan Law School, gave a brief introduction on Ms. Zhao Hong and highly appreciated her contributions to many important Chinese legislations in economic and trade areas adopted since the 1990s, as well as her practical experiences and achievements in various legal fields.
In the second session, Prof. Zhao Hong presented a lecture titled “WTO and International Rule of Law” to guests and students present. Firstly, she methodically described the opportunities and challenges for rule of law under the current international background, including the rising power of developing countries, the revival of political realism and the seemingly declining function of multilateral system, which greatly stimulated participants’ interests and thoughts. Secondly, focusing on the dispute settlement mechanism, she introduced the influence and contribution of WTO to international rule of law. Thirdly, Prof. Zhao brought economic and trade issues in China back into deeply discuss the relationship between WTO and China, including China’s contribution to the rule of law of World Trading System. Finally, Prof. Zhang Naigen summarized the lecture and share his thoughts with Professor Zhao and the participants.
In the Q&A session, Dr. Chen Li (Mr.) and some students communicated with Prof. Zhao Hong on various issues including transparency and confidentiality of the penal process, the implementation of the adjudication of the penal and the appellate body, and the relationship between WTO and bilateral/regional trade arrangements. Prof. Zhao makes reply respectively and concludes with her suggestions on the academic development of young students.
